Peressini Adjustable Bar Stools are very high quality and reliable. However, even Rolls-Royces do break down or need attention occasionally. If that happens with your adjustable bar stools, you are not alone.
If a gas column stops operating properly then it must be replaced. We can supply replacement gas columns, but first we must identify the fixing method for your gas columns. Please tip your bar stool on its side and look underneath the base plate. There is/ are 3 bolts or one bolt countersunk into the base plate which holds the gas column in place. Below is an image showing three configurations of bolts: -
Base A was the original fixing method – one large bolt. Next came Base B with three smaller bolts spread slightly apart. Finally, the current version is three smaller bolts very close together.
The only gas columns available now are those with three bolts very close together - Base C. So, if you have Base A or Base B, then we must supply a new base that will fit the gas columns. We will discuss this in more detail later in the article.
Exchanging a gas column – Base C
You start the process by removing the seat and back from the base – undo 4 bolts underneath the seat using an Allen key. If you don't have one, let us know, because we can send one with the replacement seats.
Then you need to release the upper column/ footrest from the gas lift.
I have a short video demonstrating how to do this. Unfortunately, videos are not supported on this blog but if you want to see the video, send an e-mail to info@breakfastbarstools.co.uk requesting “video to remove upper column.”
Next, take the weighted base with the gas column attached and lay it sideways on a table or a bench. You will see the 3 bolt heads when you look underneath the weighted base. They must be removed.
This can be difficult because the bolts are fitted using a power driver and sometimes lockfast is applied to stop the bolts from becoming loose. The best dodge is to use a length of pipe, or something similar, fitted over the handle of the Allen Key to increase the leverage. Ensure that the Allen key is pressed firmly into the slot in the bolt head throughout, otherwise it can damage the six-sided slot. If that happens, it is very difficult to remove the bolt.
In extreme cases, the heads of the bolts can be drilled off because the gas column is scrap anyway.
Once the three bolts are removed, then you just fit the new gas column and reverse the whole process. N.B. There is normally a plastic cap placed over the gas button on the gas column to stop the gas lift from being activated when the gas column is in transit. This plastic cap must be removed before pushing the upper column/ footrest over the gas column.
After the stool is fully assembled with the new gas column fitted, it is important to ensure that the gas column is jammed well inside the upper column, otherwise the base can drop out when you lift the stool by the seat. It is heavy if it falls on your foot.
I recommend holding the weighted base with one hand at this stage when lifting the stool. Then place the stool right way up on the floor and drop down onto the seat (sitting down firmly) two or three times. This will ensure that the new gas column is jammed inside the upper column.
Exchanging a Gas Column fitted to Bases A or B
As explained above, we cannot supply Gas columns that fit bases A or B, so we need to supply new bases as well as the new gas columns.
N.B. Many years ago, there was another manufacturer, called Effezeta, who supplied very similar stools. Effezeta went into liquidation in 2012. The gas columns on some Effezeta stools were only 37 mm diameter although they switched to 50 mm gas columns later. The gas columns on Peressini stools are 50 mm in diameter. If anyone still has Effezeta stools with 37 mm gas columns, then we would need to supply a completely new base. The Effezeta seats will fit Peressini bases.
Returning to Peressini stools with Bases A or B, we can still help you but we need to supply a new base and base cover plate as well as a new gas column. The first steps are the same as those for base C.
a) Remove the seat.
b) Separate the Gas column from the upper column/ footrest (Ask me to send the video as above)
However, before doing the above, please contact us and advise:-
- Do you have Round or Square Weighted Base(s).
2. What is the finish of the base cover plate(s) (Probably Mirror Chrome or Brushed Steel)
3. How many Gas columns need to be replaced?
We will check if we have all components in stock and we will quote for the supply and delivery.
If we have everything in stock, we can normally despatch within two or three days. If we have to order from the factory then the delivery will be longer. So it is best not to dismantle the stools too early in case we need to order some components from the factory.
Exchanging Swivelling Adjustable Stool Bases for Fixed Height Bases.
Sometimes people decide that they would rather have fixed height bar stool bases rather than adjustable bases. The main reason given is that they are being driven mad by their children endlessly playing on the stools, spinning round and round.
Certain seats in the Peressini range can be fitted with Wood Frame or Steel Frame fixed height bases. Most of these bases come in two heights, giving seat heights of about 66 cm (Suitable for a standard Kitchen Breakfast Bar) or 76 cm (Suitable for a raised Breakfast Bar, a High Bar Table or a Home Bar.) Let us know if this is of interest.
If you have any queries with any of the above, or you cannot undo the bolts despite your best efforts, then please call us.
